Has Been Seen: On page 69 of Teen People magazine’s Hot Summer Music issue in 2005 (a feature on Planet Verge), in a thumbnail size photo of Marie Claire in Dec. ‘08 modeling a holiday dress, across multiple issues of her college newspaper (The Beacon Weekly at William Paterson University) when I was the editor of the music and environmental sections and most recently, as a featured pinup girl in Venus Zine (where I also freelance).
My PV story: This all stems back from my high school journalism teacher. She ate peanut butter straight from the jar and never let us write about anything fun. I was naturally jealous (about the peanut butter) and determined to start my own publishing revolution. As soon as I entered college, I worked my way up to music editor and later launched an environmental section in the campus paper. In between semesters, I missed writing about music. So I devoted my life to working part-time jobs (which varied between smiling through a clenched jaw while saying burnt-into-my-head phrases like “Welcome to Clearview, your movie is in theater 3,” and “1/2 caf tall skim 3 pump vanilla, 1 pump hazlenut breve latte”) to save up enough cash to print my own quarterly zine, Planet Verge. I conned friends not only into writing, but trekking up and down the streets and soliciting local businesses for ads. We got a lot of doors slammed in our faces, but that didn’t last for long! What didn’t kill us made us stronger. And here we are, continuing to make our mark!
Job(s) that keep the sanity: Or cause insanity at times, in my case! I launched Audio Crush PR to help indie bands and have been lucky enough to work with such amazing talent like Cash Cash, Val Emmich, Sohodolls, The Matches andThose Mockingbirds. (Gotta plug them, I am a publicist after all). And though Planet Verge has gone digital, my heart still belongs to publishing. Thus, I formed Magazines by Joelle and create custom magazines for events or band press kits.
An ideal Saturday in my world: Sleeping till 10, brewing some gourmet flavored coffee, taking a long stroll with my dogs, catching up on magazines at Barnes and Noble, eating junk food, maybe shopping.
Favorite article of clothing: My favorite accessory is this Betsey Johnson lovebird necklace. The girl bird has eyelashes! I am obsessed with Betsey and lovebirds. This will be incorporated into my next tattoo, no doubt.
What’s on my Netflix Queue: I don’t have such cool technologically advance things (My phone is made out of recycled plastic bottles and I don’t even own an ipod!) BUT I love Soapnet and General Hospital.
What’s on my grocery list: I am obsessed with veggies, cheese crackers, kettle corn, rice milk, cupcakes from Sweet Ave and coconut milk chocolate-chip cookie dough ice cream.
Who I love: People who work at shelters and rescue dogs and donate to save the tigers.
Most starstruck moment: I’ve been on Last Call with Carson Daly as an obsessed Bon Jovi fan (they were awesome up until Crush!) and Jon even kissed my cheek on the air. Yet, I kept my total cool. The only person who ever rendered me speechless was 311’s Nick Hexum. His lyrics have had a huge impact on my life and when he walked past me on a NYC sidewalk before his show, I could barely speak.
My advice to you: Never stop chasing your dream. Do whatever it takes. Everything will eventually pay off. Believe in fate.
