We Are Wolves – The Canadians are Coming

There is a stereotype of Canadians as somewhat lacking in personality and creativity. Or at least, I stereotype Canadians as lacking in personality and creativity. We Are Wolves sought to put this theory to bed from the minute they stepped on stage at Subterranean in Chicago last week… all three dressed in full length muumuus and handkerchiefs doubling as facemasks. So visually, at least until they all got too hot to keep the frocks on, check.

Not these exact muumuus, but you get the idea
Musically, maybe not so much. Heavy influences from classic rock were woven into pretty much every number from the “indie” band. There were a few hesitant attempts at creating an original sounding tune, but the vocal interludes quickly dispelled any hopes of a true departure from their 70s foundations.
Despite some efforts to (possibly) deny their Canadian heritage, We Are Wolves did hold on to one very distinguishing feature when they lead the crowd in a rock show call and response… in French. Well intentioned, but I promise that the “Chicago! Comment êtes-vous?” did not have the edge of your typical rock show. For the fans who knew what the hell they were saying, it still seemed pretty exciting.

I personally don’t miss the muumuus….
Even with less than inspired songs and a bizarre, if short lived, wardrobe, the set was a good first step out of typical rock for anyone who is looking to carefully expand an iPod full of classics.
