Shea Seger is alive.

Ok, so she was never presumed dead, but shortly after the release of her debut album, she fell off the face of the earth.

Her story goes like this: Raised in the tiny town of Quitman, Texas, Seger began playing the piano at age two. She spent her childhood writing songs and by 1998, struck out on her own to London’s West End. There, she teamed up with Martin Terefe and Nick Whitecross and recorded her debut album, The May Street Project.

In 2000, RCA released the album in the UK. Seger was hailed as a blend of Olivia Newton-John, Sheryl Crow, Ani DiFranco and Tori Amos. In June 2001, the record hit America. Video play, magazine features, a Neptunes remix of lead single, “Clutch,” and tours with David Gray and John Mayer followed for the 21 year-old.

And that’s it.

It’s typical in the music industry that once a label wham-bam-thank-you-mam’s an artist (which sadly occurs way too often to those that bleed talent), the artist will continue on his/her own. But Seger mysteriously vanished. Even when MySpace blew up, she was nowhere to be found.

Those that fell for Sager eventually found solace together through the Facebook group “Bring Back Shea Seger” and finally-uploaded footage on You Tube.

The comments go a little something like this:

-“I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone drop off the radar so drastically.”

-“What happened to a talent like this? If she went on MySpace, she would not need any labels, but she has just vanished.”

-“Where on earth did she disappear to?”

-“I don’t understand what happened to her?! Did she die or something?!?!”

-“May 18, 2001 never gave up on finding this video (“Last Time”) until Nov 16, 2009. Eight years of searching and it still gives me a feeling of being human.”

-“How awful that she hasn’t released anything else in the nine years after this incredible debut record!!!”

Where Segar has been the past ten years remains a mystery, but one thing has been made certain: There’s a new album in her future!

Her MySpace page is streaming four new tunes. They’re bluesy, indie rock gems that will surely add to her cult following and leave others asking “Why haven’t we heard of Shea Seger before?”

IN HER WORDS….
