Celebrating the US release of their full-length album, Sign No More, Mumford and Sons performed an intimate session at Legacy Studios for Fordham University’s radio station WFUV.
Mumford and Sons took the pseudo-stage, introduced themselves, and got right into it. Within the first five seconds, I knew I was witnessing something wonderful – live, they sounded exactly like they did on the album. In total they played eight songs and did a short interview. There were some jokes about the US vs. the UK, mention of sources of inspiration, as well as some friendly banter amongst the group themselves. All in all they appeared to be a charming group of English gentlemen.
Musically, everyone seemed relaxed and really into it. They claimed that the night’s performance was mellow, but I didn’t notice. Ben’s eyes rarely left the keyboard as he wailed on it, Marcus turned bright red as he strummed like a madman and sang out the verses, Winston simply smirked as he played the banjo with incredible ease, and Ted swung the bass around as he plucked away! What was also incredible to hear was how well they harmonized with one another. It’s something you can obviously hear on the album, but it isn’t till you see them live that you can really appreciate how magnificently they achieve it.
Sigh No More is truly the first album I have listened to in a very long time that sounds completely fresh and original. When I put the record on I actually listen to songs multiple times before moving on instead of quickly skipping through. Some standout songs for me are “Dust Bowl Dance,” “Blank White Page,” and “Roll Away Your Stone.” Although I have to admit, “Little Lion Man” is the song that originally reeled me in.
After seeing them live, I absolutely suggest that you check this group out. They will be stateside this coming Spring for a nationwide tour. You won’t want to miss it!
