Grammy Love

I love the Grammy Awards for one reason above anything else: the performances.   Here are my top 5 favorite performances from this years award show.

5. The Zac Brown Band- I adore the ZBB because they are not your typical “Grammy” artists.  In a music world that’s all about selling sex in place of good music, it’s refreshing to see these guys play and rock out solos on the acoustic guitar. Playing along side Leon Russell is a plus for their three songs performed, “America the Beautiful,” “Dixie Lullaby,” and the best of the three, “Chicken Fried.”   On a side note, it was great to see them pick up an award.

4.  Taylor Swift, Stevie Nicks and Butch Walker -I know, most music fans are probably stunned this performance is in here, considering the slightly offish  not-so-harmonic soundings of Miss Swift while performing “Rhiannon,”  with Stevie; however, I was just thrilled that Butch got to play on stage and his little rendition of Swift’s hit “You Belong with Me,”  made Swift sound half decent live. (I’m not a complete Taylor Swift hater by far, I was just not thrilled at all with her performance on the show. So please, no hate comments from the tweens. )

3.  Lady GaGa and Sir Elton John-  You never know what exactly to expect when GaGa takes the stage. After dropping “Poker Face”  after the first chorus, Lady Gaga came out on a piano with Sir Elton John, both covered in soot and duetting on her track “Speechless.” With these two together the glitter was flying and it was a once in a lifetime duet that truly brought in the award show with a bang.

2. Pink - I’ve seen Pink live before and she really can belt it out beautifully, but mostly it’s a harder pop-rock sound from her.   On the red carpet Pink promised her performance of “Glitter in the Air” would get very interesting, and that it certainly did. Clad in a risque bodysuit, Pink twirled herself high in the air showing off her “Cirque du Soleil” abilities. Although the performance was hot, the people below in extremely expensive suits and gowns may not have been quite as thrilled when the singer dripped water to the crowd below after soaking herself in the liquid on a quick trip to the ground.

1. David Foster, Mary J. Blige and Andrea Bocelli - This performance was one of the highlights of my night. They performed Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” with such beautiful harmony and perfection. Andrea is one of the greatest singers I think I’ve ever had to pleasure to listen to. What’s even better about this performance is that the song will be up for sale on iTunes, with all proceeds going to benefit Haiti.

One honorable mention was the Michael Jackson tribute. I would’ve included this great performance in the top 3 if it weren’t for the fact that the 3D glasses that I picked up at Target especially for the performance did nothing but provide me with a headache. The performance  of “Earth Song” was right-on with all five singers looking and sounding amazing.  (And the Paris and Prince acceptance of their father’s award afterwards was a beautiful thing to see as well.

Ok so am I the only Butch Walker fan who didn’t know he was going to be on the Grammys? I need to keep up with Twitter!
