I was introduced to the musical styling’s of Jason Boesel last May on Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band’s debut album Outer South, where Boesel’s songs “Difference Is Time” and “Eagle On A Pole” are featured.  I was drawn in by the deeper, more haunting vocal reach of Boesel on that album so when I heard that he was putting out his first solo album, I was pretty interested to hear it.

Boesel brought in producer Jonathan Wilson (Elvis Costello’s Momofuku and Jenny Lewis’ Acid Tongue), Mystic Valley Band member Nik Freitas as well as Rilo Kiley bandmate Blake Sennett and Blake Mills (Band of Horses, Julian Casablancas) to make the record.  Other contributors include Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), Orenda Fink (O + S, Azure Ray), David Rawlings (Gillian Welch, Old Crow Medicine Show), and Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes).

Hustler’s Son is a fantastic mix of current alt-country and classic So-Cal American rock.  Boesel stays true to his indie-rock roots and brings the listener in with catchy guitar-riffs and fascinating sometimes lingering lyrics.  His title track “Hustler’s Son” is a throwback to the classic sounds of 70’s So-Cal while tracks like “Black Wave” and “I Got The Reason #1″ are more evocative and dark which give the album a provocative contrast.

Hustler’s Son is a refreshing blend of melodic So-Cal guitars and a deeper more soulful alt-country sound.  After 15 years behind a drum kit, Jason Boesel comes out swinging on Hustler’s Son and offers up something new that has yet to be heard in his genre.  This album is a fantastic start to a solo career for Boesel.

Hustler’s Son comes out Tuesday, January 12th.  You can pre-order the album at Team Love Records.
