Video Production 101 with Lostrophets
It’s often the case that bands shoot to stardom because they are shoved down the throats of consumers through radio and press outlets which promote acts the labels tell them are hot and not actually because they believe in the music.
It’s when all the funding is pulled or when a band embarks on its own journey that the truth comes to light.
For the first time,Lostprophets offers an introspective look into its world of mega-stardom via the video for “Where We Belong.” No major label backing or fancy production to record the song was needed. The band did it on its own and it’s a hit (as if anything less was expected!) The stripped down video goes back to the days when Bon Jovi was freakin’ awesome and bands made concert videos. It was all fans needed then and it’s really all bands need now.
It’s also something new bands should use to take note when planning their world domination:
-Focus on the songs (please stop wearing makeup, painting your nails and trying to look as punk as possible. It’s actually really jaded now and you look stupid.)
-Create music that’s important to you.
-Share it with the world by creating a visual aspect.
You don’t need to be rich. (Just talented!) Videos that give fans a glimpse into the world of the band is a great way to give them more of what they want- you!
The rest will come.
- Don’t think just because you can’t afford a fancy video that you can’t have one. Shoot behind the scenes moments, get a friend to film your set and edit it together on your iMac. Simple. Fun. Effective. And who knows, maybe one day you’ll be opening up for these guys:
*By Joelle, who should perhaps not be trying to write when she is laid up sick as a dog but feels she needs to share this video and her thoughts with you. Thanks for reading the fine print.
