On The Verge and the Face of Animal Cruelty

As of September 2009, pet-abuse.com lists a whopping 13,404 reported cases of animal cruelty in the United States. Animal cruelty cases are classified as either neglect or intentional cruelty. While neglect makes up a mere 32% of all cases, the scary statistics show that the majority of animal abuse among Americans is through fighting, shooting, hoarding, poisoning, beating, choking, strangling, mutilating, throwing and stabbing their pets.

With that said, there are still over 1.5 MILLION orphaned pets roaming the streets and seeking safety in overcrowded crowded shelters.

One of the most common breeds found in shelters are American Staffordshire Terriers- aka Pit Bulls. According to the ASPCA, this breed was once nicknamed “the nursemaid’s dog” because it was so reliable with young children. Unfortunately, today irresponsible owners and organized dog fights have given pit bulls a rap as vicious killers.

The Pit Bull population has increased so rapidly, shelters are now struggling to deal with an overflow of image-plagued, hard-to-place dogs. Watch as Joelle introduces you to a neglected and possibly abused six-month old pit bull puppy named Orrin Braveheart, who is available for adoption.

Those interested in fostering or adopting this adorable blue-eyed boy should e-mail Andrea or call 718-702-6382 to fill out an application.

Well done! Kudos to you for doing your part to dispel the horrible reputation that pit bulls have garnered because of idiot owners. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and hope that someone will give this beautiful pup a fur-ever home that will be safe and loving.

The worst form of animal abuse for the “Bully Breeds” is dog fighting. My book “Billy’s World” is about an American Staffordshire Puppy that I rescued from a dog fighting operation at 3 months. He had the cuts and missing patches of hair to prove that he was already “in training.” The book is making people more aware of the terrible form of animal abuse that dog fighting is for this breed. The graphical depiction of the horrors of training and fighting dogs will convince anyone who reads it that a greater effort should be made to eradicate dog fighting.

“Billy’s World” is meant to remind the reader that at this very moment there are animal gladiators being forced to kill or be killed—and this is happening all over America. They do it not because they are vicious, but because of their unflinching loyalty and desire to please. Others of the same breed, strength, and temperament are playing with children or snuggling to a human companion. Same noble breed—the only difference is in the people around them.

If these breeds are re-socialized back into a world where people love them and care for them they become one of the most loving creatures alive. They must be given a chance.

Great video, Andrea! This little guy and his sister have drawn quite a bit of attention. Thank you for being their rescue angel and for putting them both in hands that will never hurt them again.
