I Just Ate Chocolate with Kale, Wheat Grass, Limes and Papayas In It

I’d seen it once before by the check-out at my local health food store: the chocolate bar that boasted it was not only delicious but “Nutritious.” I skimmed the label details while the cashier bagged my groceries. I was shocked to read the ingredients listed DOZENS of fruits and vegetables.

Immediately skeptical, I asked the cashier, “Does this really taste good? I’ve never seen chocolate that contains alfalfa leaf and broccoli…”

The cashier laughed and said he wasn’t sure, that he’d never been adventurous enough to try it.

I decided not to try it either, that time. If it was that easy to get us to eat our greens then I should’ve heard about it already (or it should have been invented 20 years ago when my mom couldn’t get me to put anything green in my mouth…how times have changed…sigh,I digress)…

I must’ve been feeling adventurous today (or had a craving for chocolate but didn’t really want to indulge it) and decided I’d wager $3.49 for the massive bar: Gary Null’s Nutritious Chocolate.

Let me first baffle you with some of the details of this “nutritious” and “delicious” chocolate bar:

  1. It contains 20 grams of soy protein
  2. It’s “rich in antioxidants, phytonutrients and heart-healthy phytosterols” (did someone just say phytonutrient??)
  3. It contains Green Algae Powder, Wheat Grass Powder, Green Barley Powder, Alfalfa Leaf, Oat Grass, Broccoli, Parsley, Kale, Aloe Vera, Cranberries, Strawberries, Apples, Cherries, Red Raspberries, Peaches, Pears, Papayas, Mangoes, Watermelons, Red Currants, Nectarines, Pink Grapefruits, Blood Oranges, Pomegranate, Pineapples, Lemons, Limes, Tangerines and Apricots
  4. It’s low in carbs

All these details sound great, but in a chocolate bar?

And finally, the taste test. Hesitantly, I took a small bite from a small square. It tasted like chocolate. I happily finished the small square and even had a second piece. It didn’t taste like green algae or like peaches, it just tasted like chocolate, which to my taste buds = YUMMY.

So it’s true then, you can get greens from a chocolate bar, and I think you’ll enjoy it.

**By Jordana who also stocked up on “real” greens today too including collards, arugula, sprouts and avocados
