Alisha’s Top 5 Michael Jackson Videos

Hey all! I’m here to introduce a new weekly music series I created called “Alisha’s Top 5,” inspired by one of my favorite movies, High Fidelity. This is a chance for me to share with you some of my favorite music by various categories each week. I originally had a category set for this week regarding my new favorite bands, Passion Pit and Black Kids, but once I found out the King of Pop had passed away, I knew I wanted to do something special to honor his music.

His death comes as a shocking tragedy to music fans around the world, and we each have our own fond memories of Michael Jackson, so I want to take this time to share mine. Despite the controversy surrounding his personal life, Michael Jackson was a musical genius. I loved him as a kid in the 80s and 90s–I seriously would dance in front of the TV and sing along to his music videos (really, they were mini movies) like “Smooth Criminal” and “Remember The Time.” Today I am devoting myself to listen to his legendary music collection which has taken me back to those childhood days when I’d dance around my living room. So here are my top 5 favorite Michael Jackson music videos. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do, and we all take a moment today to reflect on this terrible loss.

Rest In Peace, Michael.

Alisha’s Top 5 Michael Jackson Music Videos

     1.  Smooth Criminal   This was one of the first videos I’d ever seen that I became obsessed with. I loved the story behind the song and how I didn’t completely get what was going on but nonetheless I was hooked. The dancing is just incredible, I love the girl in the video, I love the setting and entire ensemble. To see a song come to life at such a young age for me was completely new and engaging, a masterpiece for its time I’d say.
    2.  Remember the Time  Really, what’s NOT to love about this video? So many guest stars that blow your mind, the fact that this is more of a movie than a simple promotional music video, the location being Egypt and the song of course. I remember watching this video non-stop in front of my TV when I was maybe 11 years old dancing like I was in the video with MJ. I admit, I had a mild crush on the King of Pop because of this video. My favorite part is when the song slows down and all the Egyptian dancers come out to the floor for their big scene. Every single move is on point and I always tried to imitate them but could never quite get it right. It’s so good!

3.  Rock With You (embedding was disabled!) I really love this song as is. I love the simplicity of it and it’s one of my favorite songs to dance to. The reason I enjoy the video is because I have a soft spot for 70s style music. This style is timeless and always brings a smile to your face. This video is great because it’s a young Michael just when he was reaching vast popularity. I loved the glitter outfit, the microphone, and disco lights centered around him. It’s just a groovy song all around that I can’t resist.

    4.  Leave Me Alone  You’re probably thinking, “Well that’s a weird choice,” and you’re right, it is. But again, as a child I was intrigued by all of Michael Jackson’s videos and the ones I loved most were the really bizarre, story-like ones. I really can’t explain why I love this video, I think it’s mostly just a nostalgia factor for me and its originality. You just keep thinking “what the heck is going on!?” and the video never fully answers it, and it’s what makes this video awesome.

    5. Beat It   It’s just too good. Think of how many people have attempted to recreate this video over the years. And can you blame them? I love this video and the song of course because of this–the parodies, the jokes, the re-creations. My dad used to joke around during times I didn’t want dinner and sing “EAT ITTTT” to me just like MJ and it’d work. The Weird Al parody is hilarious too. But “Beat It” is just another form of proof of why there is only ONE Michael Jackson.

What are your top 5 favorite Michael Jackson videos?

Thriller is for sure one of my favorites. It’s a mini movie-MJ always had such creative flow with his videos. They were unamatchable at his time.
